Abstract

The story of the people of Haida Gwaii, is echoed by the story of their totem art. Haida Totems are representative of the survival of the Haida people in the face of colonial encroachment. The rise and fall of their totems tells a story of feast and famine, wealth and decay, and eventually; rejuvenation. This website will examine Haida Totems by looking at the damage sustained by colonial de-territorialization and the ways in which the intertextual flexibility of the art form has allowed for their modern day return.
